MDM: Mobile Device Management explained simply

MDM stands for Mobile Device Management. It lets IT set up company devices remotely: apps, Wi-Fi, VPN, security rules and updates. If a device gets lost, it can be locked or erased.

Which solution fits?

Since 2026 Apple Business includes free device management. For many small and medium-sized companies that is enough. Companies that need more, for example deep integration with Microsoft environments or many platforms in one console, use specialised solutions such as Jamf or Microsoft Intune. Both can be connected to Apple Business Manager, even side by side.

Why MDM matters: an example

A large real estate company in Austria worked without MDM for a long time. There were no consistent security rules for its iPhones. When someone left the company, their iPhone was often unusable without the passcode, an expensive paperweight. Apple Business Manager and MDM solved the problem: the devices verifiably belong to the company, the rules apply to everyone, and devices of former employees can be reset and reassigned. Sandro Lunardi supported this project during his time at Apple.
